Turkish has 29 letters and a beautiful promise: it is phonetic. What you see is what you say. Learn the sounds once and you can read anything.

The letters English speakers find new

ç — like "ch" in church. ş — like "sh" in ship. c — like "j" in jam (not a hard k!). ı — a dotless i, a soft sound from the back of the mouth. ö and ü — rounded front vowels, like German. ğ — the "soft g", which mostly lengthens the vowel before it.

The rule that changes everything

Because spelling is consistent, you never have to memorize how a word is written separately from how it sounds. This removes a huge burden that languages like English and French place on learners.
